The Solution: A Novel Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment
The Independent Explorers Program is a pioneering effort to provide transdisciplinary therapy services to children aged 0-5 with diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorder, in-utero substance exposure, intellectual disabilities, and more. Instead of letting health insurance dictate the quality and quantity of healthcare we should provide, we want to leave that decision to the experts in childhood development.
The Independent Explorers Program aims to raise $1,015,808 to reach its full potential. While CSCSLV plans to collaborate with Medicaid for healthcare costs, anticipated spending cuts may limit access for low-income families.

Our Story
The Children's Specialty Clinic of the San Luis Valley was created by Dr. Mikaila Pence, a pediatrician who lives in the San Luis Valley. While working in a local hospital system, she noticed the decreased access to high quality services such as medical-based therapies and pediatric specialists in the San Luis Valley. With the support and labor of her family, she bought and remodeled a space to create the clinic space we have today.
Initially, our goal was to provide rental space to individuals looking to work as independent therapists, doctors and specialists. As we've grown, our vision has evolved into building a one-stop shop for medical care for children with disabilities and their families.
Through grant funding from foundations such as the LOR Foundation, Denver Foundation, Community Foundation of the San Luis Valley and others, our board and volunteers have built the San Luis Valley's first Outdoor Safe Elopement Space and Life Skills therapy space.
